This space was built for the CEO of a high-tech company in Silicon Valley. Placed in a large office building, it provides a serene atmosphere in contrast to the fast pace of the rest of the building. It includes a traditional Japanese alcove (tokonoma), tatami-mat floor, a ceiling of red cedar panels framed by white cedar, and walls surfaced with Japanese mud plaster. The 3’x 6’ cherry-wood table can be lowered into a rectangular depression in the floor when not in use and covered with a tatami mat. This depression also allows people to sit Western-style at the table even though they are seated on the floor.
